Students building a wooden boat hull from scratch — Introduction to Boat Building course at Seamanship Academy

Introduction to Boat Building

Join us for 15 days to experience the start-to-finish process of building a simple wooden boat as a team, from design and lofting through to launch. You will learn basic boat terminology and traditional sailing boat types, the structural components of a hull, propulsion and rigging arrangements, and methods for producing wooden hulls — both traditional (carvel and clinker) and modern (strip-planked and cold-moulded).

The course covers the full range of boatbuilding tools, materials and techniques, mast, spar and rig making, fitting out, painting and finishing — ending with launching your boat and taking her out on the water for the first time.
